Session Description:

This session will provide participants with a brief introduction to Universal Design for Learning focusing how the three principles of UDL: providing multiple means of representation, expression and engagement can be practically achieved leveraging the technologies available in 21st century learning environments.. But this will be our beginning. Participants will be challenged to think beyond the “technology to pedagogy” – to proactively design inclusive 21st century learning for the real diversity of students that we can expect in today’s learning environments.

“For people without disabilities, technology makes things convenient, whereas for people with disabilities, it makes things possible…” This quote effectively highlights why, even in the context of UDL environments, educators will still need to support the effective use of assistive technologies for their students with disabilities. This session will provide participants with an introduction to assistive technologies focusing on those which will help students with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities to actively participate in meaningful learning experiences. Implications for practice will also be discussed.
