May 2012 Workshop - EAL Learners: Language Learning or Learning Difficulties?

Saturday January 14, 2012

Information and registration NOW AVAILABLE!  CLICK HERE!!

The characteristics of learning difficulties in many ways may mirror characteristics associated with learning an additional language. When English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners struggle with reading, it can be difficult to distinguish between learning difficulties and the language acquisition process.

·        What should teachers do when students with EAL needs are struggling?

·        What if some students really do have learning challenges apart from their stages of language learning?

·        How can teachers tell which students should receive additional support?

Although many educators may be aware that language learning practices, best practices for supporting students with EAL needs, and cultural variations should be considered when assessing student progress, designing interventions, and interpreting these students’ responses to instruction, they are not always confident that they have sufficient expertise to carry out these activities.

·        Dr. Klingner will discuss these challenges and how to address them!
